IEBC has reported a low voter registration turnout in the ongoing voter registration exercise launched on Monday 4th October 2021.

According to the Commission, only 202,518 new voters have registered in the last seven days, out of the weekly national target of 1500000 voters.

Mombasa, Nairobi, Kirinyaga, Embu, Laikipia, Murang’a, Kitui, Nyandarua, Nyeri, and Kiambu counties have registered the lowest percentages of targets achieved in one week.

Meanwhile, counties such as Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Wajir, West Pokot, Mandera, Nandi, Baringo, Narok, Turkana, and Tana River counties have registered the highest percentages of targets achieved in the last one week.

The exercise that is set to run for thirty days, targets to enroll 6 million new voters, who have attained 18 years and have acquired national identification cards or have valid passports or other citizens who were not registered in the previous drives.

The exercise will be conducted in the 27,241 gazetted registration centers countrywide that include the 52 Huduma centers. Kit movement within the County Assembly Ward will be agreed on in consultation with relevant stakeholders during the ECVR period.

IEBC has deployed the Biometric Voter Registration(BVR) system with a total of 43,350 BVR kits distributed to register voters within the county assembly wards they are stationed.

The distribution of the BVR kits at the ward level is to ensure accessibility of registration centers by new voters who would otherwise be discouraged by long distances to registration centers.

IEBC further adds that the BVR Kit deployed in each constituency will reach the young, eligible voters in universities and institutions of higher learning to register in electoral areas of their choice in any part of the country.

During the first week of the ECVR, a total of,5206 requests for voter transfer were serviced. The commission reminds all Kenyans that the transfer program is done at the 290 constituencies.

Kenyans who wish to transfer their registration details, however, feel like it should be done at the voting areas instead of the long process to constituency offices where most people will not be able to go.

As a strategy of ensuring eligible voters turn up in large numbers, the commission has hired voter mobilizers in the 290 constituencies to create enthusiasm and awareness of the exercise.

IEBC has urged citizens to unconditionally embrace the exercise which will amount to peaceful elections & shun violence that is retrogressive to our economic growth and social cohesion. Elections should serve as an opportunity for us to debate & synthesize the best ideas and strategies for nation-building.

The Kenyan Voters remain the most important stakeholder in the Election Process and IEBC invites all of you to walk with them in their onward march to a stronger democracy.

The 2022 General Election will be held on August 9, despite a section of politicians calling for a postponement of the polls due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Not casting your vote means that you will be letting others choose their leader and not your leader. Your one vote can make a difference.
