African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is a voluntary Governance “Self-Assessment” by African countries and a forum that has the mandate of ensuring that the policies and practices of the participating countries conform to the agreed values and believes in the focused areas such as democracy, political governance, economic governance, corporate governance as well as socio economic development.

As part and parcel of African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), there are reviews that are periodic for the participating African countries to assess the progress being made towards achieving the mutually agreed goals that were meant to move these countries forward.

By the year 2015, a total of 35 countries had acceded to the APRM and this forum was agreed upon by African Union (AU) under NEPAD and was officially adopted in the year 2003.

Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda and Mauritius were the first four pioneers of this process. Kenya signed the APRM memorandum of understanding committing to APRM in March 2003 AND IN 2006, Kenya became the third African state to be peer reviewed at AU Banjul Summit.
