The Development Agenda of Kenya is based on the Kenya Vision 2030, aiming at creating a globally competitive and prosperous country with a high quality of life by the year 2030.
The energy sector is very core to the development of the economy. The Kenya Vision 2030 identifies the energy sector as being a key foundation as well as one of the infrastructural backbone on which the economic, social as well as political pillars of this long-term development strategy will be built. Without energy, a country cannot move forward in terms of industrialization.
The implementation of the flagship projects highlighted in the Vision 2030 are and will to a great extend depend on supply of adequate, reliable, clean as well as affordable energy. The demand for electricity will increase since electricity is a prime mover of the commercial sector of the economy.
The Energy sector is a key player in tackling challenges facing the country such as reduction of poverty by half as per the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and overall improvement in the general welfare of the population.
The Ministry of Energy will play a facilitative role in Energy supply by creating an enabling environment for private sector-led growth through policy formulation and development of an appropriate legal and regulatory framework and oversight responsibility.
Guided by its Vision of “Affordable quality Energy for all Kenyans” and while realizing its Mission “ to facilitate provision of clean, sustainable, affordable, reliable and secure energy services at least cost while protecting the environment”, the Ministry will play its contributory role towards achievement of Kenya Vision 2030 by;
- Enhancing power generation capacity
- (ii)Increasing access to Electricity
- (iii)Development of new and renewable sources of Energy
- (iv)Ensuring security of fossil fuel resources
- (v)Capacity building of the Energy sector.
