Economically Disadvantaged Youths to be Trained by Cap Yei and MasterCard Foundation

CAP Youth Empowerment Institute (Cap Yei), a non-governmental organization, in collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation have announced a Sh.1 billion partnership that will help in generating jobs for youths in Kenya.

Mastercard will be the financing partner in the collaboration whole Cap Yei, which is the Kenyan affiliate of CAP Workforce Development Institute of India will take the training part of the youth.

The agreement between the two organizations is set to run for the coming five years, and it specifically target youths from poor backgrounds where they will get a chance to be provided with technical skills which will in turn enable them access employment easily of create their own jobs by the end of the training.

A total of 23,000 Kenyan youths are set to directly benefit from the training. The Programme will build on the success of Cap Yei Basic Employment Skills Training (BEST) model. These youths will at the end of it all to either secure employment opportunities for themselves or continue with their education.

Cap Yei executive director Ndung’u Kahihu said that the best model has become an important solution for youth seeking employment as well as employers seeking skilled workers.

“This new partnership will contribute to a sustainable solution for youth employment in Kenya, reaching tens of thousands of youth with the critical skills they need to enter the workforce or start a small business,” said Karen Moore, the programme manager of youth livelihoods at The MasterCard Foundation.

The programme will reach an additional 39,000 youth through partnerships with 100 vocational training centers that will be supported to train across the country. From this number, 4,000 will be expected to establish or grow micro-enterprises. The first phase of the project was launched in 2011.
