British firm Tullow Oil and its Joint Venture Partners has announced that its exploration has resulted in an oil discovery at Erut-1.

Erut-1 was drilled 10km north of Etom-2 and is the most northerly oil discovery in the South Lokichar basin with a gross oil interval of 55m with 25m of net oil pay.

Exploration Director Angus McCoss in a statement said, “This is an exciting discovery from a bold exploration well that proves that oil has migrated to the northern limit of the South Lokichar basin.”

“This extends the known hydrocarbon limits of the basin beyond the successful Etom discovery into the underexplored northern part of the basin where we have several undrilled prospects.

“Following the scheduled appraisal wells at Amosing-6 and Ngamia-10, further exploration drilling of this area is now being planned.”

Tullow is operating on-shore blocks namely;10BA,10A,10BB,13T,12A and 12B.

The company recommenced exploration drilling activities in four wells in the South Lokichar basin in December.

Oil production is expected to begin in March and its exportation in June 2017 with the production of 2000–4000 barrels per day that will be transported to Mombasa.
