First sitting of 12th Kenyan Parliament to be held next week Thursday

Kenya’s National Assembly and the Senate will hold their first sittings next Thursday this is after President Uhuru Kenyatta gazetted the date.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) show that a total of 288 members of parliament were elected across the country excluding Kitutu Chache and Kikuyu constituencies with 1,450 Members of the County Assembly (MCA’s).

47 women were elected by voters of each of the counties, each constituting a single member constituency in the General Election held on August 8.

During swearing in, National Assembly Clerk  will administer the Oath or Affirmation of Office to all Members present in the House in alphabetical order, following the sequence prescribed under Standing Order 3(2) of the National Assembly Standing Orders, which is-

(i)      Members with the longest cumulative period of service in the National Assembly;
(ii)     Members with the longest cumulative period of service in the National Assembly, the East African Legislative Assembly and the Senate;
(iii)    Members with the longest cumulative period of service in the Senate; and
(iv)   All other Members.

On this first sitting, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Deputy Speaker will also be elected after the administration of oath or affirmation of office to the MPs.

The 11th parliament was dissolved on August 7th 2017, a day before the General elections were conducted.
