Photographers are now free to document Nairobi City – Gov. Sonko

Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, has said during his tenure, photographers will be ‘free to document’ Kenya’s capital.

In response to Mr. Larry Asego,  Classic 105’s radio presenter’s plea on Twitter to stop the harassment meted on photographers. “Morning Governor elect plea from photographers. The harassment is too much We want to document our lovely city in peace,” he had pleaded.

In response, the Governor said, “ I won’t allow any harassment. Photographers are now free to document our great city.”

The move is being heralded by photographers and free press advocates as a win for marketing the Nairobi City.

Kathambi Mutegi tweeted, “This is the greatest tweet I have read today!”

However, it should be noted that, no one can take photos in ‘No photography in prohibited areas” anyone who goes against the warning risks being arrested and charged.

Further, the Official Secrets Act outlaws photo taking in prohibited areas like government buildings, military establishments, anywhere where there is a government armoury or any place gazetted as so by the Cabinet Secretary for Defence.
