The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) says it cost them Ksh 100 Million to repair a kilometer of a destroyed tarmac road.
KeNHA Chairman Erastus Mwongera on Tuesday said those found culpable will be prosecuted and forced to incur costs of repairing the damaged roads.
“The government has been progressively creating an enabling environment for the attainment of economic development objectives and encouraging improvements in key road infrastructure. This, however, has come under threat with the losses being made due to the unfortunate behavior of burning tires on paved roads which will eventually cost the taxpayers millions of shillings to repair, rehabilitate and reconstruct the damaged road sections. We urge picketers to obey the rule of law and avoid burning roads,” said Mwongera.
According to KenHA, the construction of paved roads is a very costly undertaking. It is estimated that, currently a kilometer of paved road coast in excess of Ksh 100 million of National Trunk Road. This translates to Ksh 100,000 per metre and or Ksh 50,000 per cubic metre of bituminous surface repair.
