Maize Farmers Dispute Government Figures of Bags of Maize Bought

Maize

The government through the ministry of Agriculture has announced that it has bought a total of one million bags of maize from farmers in a span of two months.

According to the Agricultural Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett, the government is planning to buy an extra two million bags of maize at the end of this month.

Early this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the government would buy maize from farmers at the price of 3,200 shillings per every 90-kilogram bag.

The announcement let to the influx of farmers to government depots to sell their produce but were disappointed when majority were turned way over the high moisture content in their maize.

Majority also complained of the slow process at the main buying point in Moi’s Bridge and Kitale and that less than two machines used to take in maize have been working for the last two months.

Farmers are now saying that the information from the ministry that it has bought two million bags of maize is misleading saying that they still have millions of bags of maize in possession.

This year, maize farmers in Kenya have gone through a series of losses with almost a quarter of the harvest having been destroyed by the vicious armyworms.

The government has also been blamed for slugging to tackle the armyworm menace, only leaving farmers with endless promises.
