Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has received the wrath of comrades both online and offline following the decision of the management to invite a standard eight pupil during a graduation ceremony to come and ‘encourage’ the comrades about ‘life.’
Goldalyn Kakuya, the young girl who emerged top in the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), is said to have been given a platform to address comrades who were graduating on Friday last week in which she called on them to ‘emulate her in working hard and beating all odds like she did.’
Furious comrades took to social media to pour out their anger with some calling on the institution to explain why it had to ‘demean’ the comrades to that level.
“MMUST should, by use of diagrams, explain to comrades how on earth, a standard eight pupil, whose only success was to pass a multiple-choice exam, qualified to advise comrades on how to be successful and live outside campus,” Said Chris Ambani, on Facebook.
“Does the little girl, Kakuya, know what it means to be a comrade? Using 5o shillings to survive the whole week because you have nothing? Reading day and night for an exam that a lecturer has not even taught?” Asked Evelin Inyangala.
“Goldalyn Kakuya was invited to Masinde Muliro graduation to give a word of encouragement to Graduates. What’s happening in Kenya? Is Masinde Muliro a university or a Kindergarten? What/Which advice can a post-primary student give to a graduate or to graduands?” Kevin Teya poured out his anger.
Through its Facebook page, the institution has cleared the air through its Facebook page:
