Lecturers have been on strike for more than 75 days now but the government has pulled another surprise in a move to end the strike.
It is now emerging that the government has offered the striking varsity workers as little as 53 shillings as an increment in their salaries.
The government had given the striking lecturers a counter offer of 3.6 billion shillings with a breakdown indicating that the highest paid professor will earn 1,000 shillings more.
According to the unions, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), the offer is a “provocative and grossly below the market value of universities academic staff.”
According to the government offer, by the end of four years, in which the plan, if accepted is supposed to be implemented, the lowest paid university worker will get a rise of 212 shillings, a 0.435 percent increase.
If it is implemented, at the end of this year, the lowest paid worker will go home with 53 shillings on top of his salary while those from KUSU going home with 85 shillings more.
The highest paid professor will earn an additional 1,081 shillings during the first phase of implementation.
