Government Sets Aside Kshs.3 Billion for Rebuilding Gikomba Market

The government has set aside 3 billion shillings for rebuilding Gikomba market that burned down in June.

This is according to the Deputy President William Ruto, who disclosed that the market would be rebuilt in the next two years.

The rebuilding is meant to help curb future fire incidents that have been frequenting the largest open market in Kenya.

Speaking on Sunda, Ruto stated that after the implementation of the plan, fires at the Gikomba market will be a thing of the past

“We have to stop these incidences of fires every year, that is the reason we are investing 3 billion shillings,” said Ruto.

At least 15 people died while more than 70 people were injured and properties worth millions of shillings destroyed in Gikomba fire which broke down in June.

Fire at the Gikomba market has been frequently reported. Last year, there were two incidents that happened, one in October and another one in September respectively.

Traders at the market count major lose whenever such occurrences take place.
