Sugar price continues to rise following the ongoing crackdown of contraband sugar by the government in the country.
In most parts of the country, a kilogram of sugar is retailing between 180 shillings and 195 shillings in one has been termed as the highest price this year.
In Nairobi’s supermarkets goes at 180 Kenya shillings from 90 Kenya shillings last month.
In Mombasa, one kilogram that used to go at 110 Kenya shillings is now between 140 Kenya shillings to 150 Kenya shillings with 2 kilograms going for 270 Ksh.
While in Bungoma one kilogram retails at 195 Kenya shilling with a 2 kilogram of sugar in the same region going for between 390 and 400 shillings.
Majority of the wholesalers are now selling a 50-kilogram bag at 6,000 Kenya shillings,
Sugar price is likely to rise even further if the current shortage facing the country persists.
The government has stepped up the fight on contraband sugar, so far at least 17 warehouses in Mombasa has been closed in the ongoing crackdown.
