Many people think that all countries in the world have airports. What they do not know is that out of around 196 countries in the world, five of them have no airports.
Andorra
This is a small landlocked country between Spain and France. Among the five countries that lack airports, Andorra is the largest. It is about 468 square kilometers with a population of about 90,000 people.
Monaco
This is a city-state situated in the French Riviera. It is bordered by France on three sides and by the Mediterranean Sea on the other side. It is the second smallest country in the world with a geographical area of 2.02 kilometers.
San Marino
This is a micro-state that is landlocked on all sides by Italy. It is about 61 square kilometers with an estimated population of 30,000. The country only has one private airstrip in Torraccia and an international heliport located in Borgo Maggiore.
Vatican City
This is the smallest country in the world. It is a city-state with a geographical area of 44 hectares and a population of about 840 people. It is surrounded by the capital city of Rome, Italy. The country has no airports or highways. It only has one heliport used by the Pope and visiting head of states.
Liechtenstein
This is a small landlocked country found between Switzerland and Austria. It is has a geographic area of 160 square kilometers with an estimated population of 35,000.
How do people in these countries fly?
Well, these countries have heliports allowing the landing of small aircraft and helicopters. For international flights, however, they have to travel to neighboring countries in order to board a plane. Therefore, to fly to another country, people from these countries have to travel into a neighboring country before flying out.
All these countries are located in Europe.
