Parliament has passed President Uhuru’s 8 percent fuel tax. The opposing side needed 233 votes to bring down the proposal but failed to get the numbers and will now see it enacted into law.
The session had 215 members of parliament out of the total 290 elected and 12 parties nominated. Given that the fuel tax has been a bone of contention, Kenyans expected it to be a full house.
The voting was followed by a standoff as the honorable members could not agree and turned the parliament into a marketplace as they booed out the chair. It took Speaker Justine Muturi’s intervention to calm down the house.
The house erupted into chaos as a section of members expressed their dissatisfaction with how the process was carried out disagreeing with the results.
Kenyans are already over-taxed and the MPs, although still protesting, have just given the government the go-ahead to rob the pockets of the ordinary citizen.
