Kenya Airways management has condemned the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) of malicious intentions to want to disrupt the maiden direct flight from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the United States of America on 28th.
The workers allied to the organization had issued a strike notice to the management over what they termed as the failure of KQ’s management to implement better pay as well as working conditions.
The workers also said that they would disrupt the process of the maiden trip to the United States which is set to take place in 2018, launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Kenya Airways has undergone a massive transformation in the past 12 months with great support from the government to make operating to the USA from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a reality,” Said KQ in a statement.
KQ says that they are surprised by the “destructive behavior the union has demonstrated by asking staff to stay away from the US operations and can only view this as an attempt to use this positive occasion as an opportunity to pressurize the management in negotiations.”
KQ management had vowed to use all legal means to block any attempt that would jeopardize the US trip. On Wednesday, Statehouse moved in to calm the situation and promised to help the airline and the workers broker a deal.
“Our focus as an organization is to create jobs directly and indirectly so the call to stay away from such a momentous occasion that will contribute to not only the nation, but the region is incomprehensible as negotiations commenced last week and have not been concluded,”
KQ says that the flight will go on as planned and that those who have already booked the tickets have nothing to worry.
“Opening of the New York City route is with no doubts one of the key highlights and culmination of a year of hard work and we would like to assure our guests and stakeholders that operations will go on as planned”.
