The long-awaited rain season should be coming to an end now but it did not even happen and the Kenya Meteorology Department has no assurance of the clouds opening up any time soon.
The Acting Deputy Director of Kenya Meteorological Department, Bernard Chanzu, has requested Kenyans to stop expecting the rains as the March-April-May long rains showed no signs of coming down.
Chanzu has instead informed Kenyans to brace for a hot dry period with dire results of water scarcity as most resources are likely to dry up.
Grocery prices have already doubled due to the prolonged dry season and with the recent spike in fuel prices, the situation is already unbearable for most households.
Mr Chanzu has blamed the disappointing rains on climate change which seems like a situation of nature avenging for the pollution it has had to withstand. Is this what was called global warming?
There’s no immediate rainfall in the horizon this week and all the signs point to the weather persevering to the end of the season according to the MET deputy director.
“The bigger picture about prolonged dry spell which means drought is foreseeable is growing increasingly clear,” Chanzu noted on Tuesday adding that their data shows that May too would be a dry season. The current dry and hot weather period is accompanied by very high temperatures in both daytime and nighttime running up to 41°C.
Drought has since led to starvation deaths to both animals and human beings in nomadic counties. The Government ought to hence mitigate measures to ensure food security in the coming days.
Counties in the Western Highlands have however experienced substantial rainfall with counties such as Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Homa Bay, Trans Nzoia and Kericho.
“This is because of the persistent high pressures over the Arabian region and the tropical cyclones in the western Indian Ocean,” the met director said.
The Met had earlier predicted rain across the Country raising hopes amongst Kenyans especially farmers which did not comes to pass and it seems like we will all have to wait longer before the rains come.
