Kenyan Members of Parliament (MPs) are spending a whopping 5 million shillings of the Taxpayer’s money to watch the Afcons in Egypt.
The five legislators who are sponsored by Parliament will pocket a cool 100,000 shillings every day as an allowance for the next two weeks in Cairo.
This comes just a few months after the legislators visited Russia to watch the FIFA World Cup matches and unto which the Auditor General Edward Ouko asked the Minister of Sports to recover funds spent for the facilitation of two MPs saying it was illegally wired to their accounts.
In 2018, a team of legislators travelled to Cairo for the Afcon games. The question that remains in the mouths of Kenyans is, “how do these expensive trips to watch football games benefit Kenya and ‘Wanjiku’ at the ground level?”
It cannot be overlooked that the legislatures have been complaining of poor pay which has since seen them push for hefty housing allowances. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) continues to protest in a bid to protect the taxpayer from being exploited by their Members of Parliament.
Legislators who are currently in Cairo hoping to bag a total of 5 million shillings altogether are:
- Faith Gitau Wanyama – Nyandarua Women Representative
- Bernard Shinali – Ikolomani MP
- Mary Wamua – Maragua MP
- Japhet Mutai – Buret MP
- Dan Wanyama- Webuye East MP
The five, plus more self-sponsored legislators, could be in Cairo up to the point Kenya plays all her games.
Kenya is currently set to play against Tanzania in her second game after losing the first to Algeria in a style that has seen Kenyans mock the National team.
