FaceApp Gives Developer Permanent Access to User Details

FaceApp, a mobile application for IOS and Android developed by Russian company Wireless Lab is probably one of the most downloaded mobile applications by social media users all over the world.

The application which uses neural network technology automatically generates highly realistic transformation faces in photographs to make them look older, younger or make it smile.

FaceApp has been trending on social media the past few days with social media users all over the world engaging in the #faceappchallenge where their pictures are automatically transformed to look an extra 50 years older.

It has however come to the attention of security experts who have warned social media users against using the application.

The security experts say that the FaceApp mobile application which was developed in 2017 has a questionable that gives it permanent access to users’ detail.

With the company’s never-ending, irrevocable royalty-free license, the company is able to do whatever it wishes with the images without their users’ consent. Which would mean that by now, FaceApp owns access to more than 150 million people’s faces and names?

According to an excerpt, FaceApp terms and conditions read as follows;

“You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide , fully-paid, transferrable sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform and display your user content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels not known or later developed, without compensation to you.”
