Motorists in Nairobi will pay double fees for parking within the city centre as governor Sonko seeks to increase the fees from 200 to 400 shillings.
Motorists will also pay 200 shillings for parking in residential areas and 300 shillings for parking is shopping centres and business hubs.
The business hubs that are named in the proposal are; Yaya Centre, Eastleigh, Industrial Area, Upper Hill, Community, Westlands, Hurlingham, Ngara and Girigiri.
This move is an effort to decongest the Central Business District and reverse the drastic drop in revenue collection by the county.
City hall said that the reduction in parking fees was the cornerstone of the amendments done last year and has drastically reduced revenue collections from daily parking and increased congestion within the CBD.
In his campaign manifesto, Sonko had promised that Nairobi residents that he would cut off the parking fees to half, but apparently, this decision is an exact contrast of his promise.

As the biggest source of revenue to the county, parking fees amount to about 2 billion shillings every year and this move would seek to boost that.
If collected honestly, that is minus corruption and favours, the parking fees would see the county raise up a good revenue to enable it to fix its services and operations.
Even though this is good news to the county administration, the motorists will be left crackling as they are also struggling with the increase in fuel and petrol prices.
The price of a litre of petrol increased from 100.09 shillings to 115 shillings in the month of February. The price might change if the proposed budget takes full effect this month.
Lorries and non-commercial buses will pay a total of 1000 shillings while trucks will pay 3000 shillings for parking in the business district. Half of the respective fees will be charged if they park in the residential areas.
The monthly parking tickets will go at 7000 shillings while the yearly tickets will go at 55,000 shillings.
The same proposal was made in September last year by the city hall but the Members of county assembly rejected it and instead reduced the fee by half the price.
