The price of a kilogram of Ndengu (green grams) is currently retailing at a price of 143 shillings, up from 102 shillings in May.
A 90 Kg bag of Ndengu is being sold at an average price of 12,420 shillings throughout the country, a 34 percent increase in price from an average of 9,220 shillings in May.
The Kenya Ministry of Agriculture reports that the wholesale price of a 90 Kg bag of Ndengu is currently being sold at 8,000 shillings in Nairobi, 12,000 shillings in Kajiado, 10,800 shillings in Kitale, 8,100 shillings in Meru and 10,800 shillings in Taveta.
Meanwhile, another variety of Ndengu, known as Polish/Nylon green grams is also retailing at 143 shillings.
The Regional Agriculture Trade Intelligence Network (RATIN) reports that the price of a kilogram of Polish Ndengu is being sold at 120 shillings in Mombasa and 80 shillings in Kisumu, 85 shillings in Tororo Uganda, 83 shillings in Lira, 95 shillings in Arusha and 52 shillings in Tunduma.
Ndengu Special, a brown variety of green grams is being sold at a retail price of 123 shillings and 118 shillings wholesale price. A 100 Kg bag of the same is going for 11,800 shillings.
The Ndengu special is preferred over the ordinary Ndengu due to its filling and does not cause heartburn or digestive gas.
Moong Dall, is split green gram, grown locally in Makueni and Matuu, Kenya is currently selling at a retail price of 183 shillings and 173 shillings wholesale price.
The Dall is a favorite among the Indians, Somalis, and Arabs.
Lentils, commonly referred to as Kamande is retailing at an average price of 223 shillings per kilogram and 213 shillings wholesale price. A 50 Kg bag of Kamande is currently being sold at 10,650 shillings across most Kenyan markets.
