The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has gazette Monday the 12th of August as a public holiday to mark the Islamic festival Eid al-Adha.
As advised by the Chief Kadhi Sheikh Ahmed Sharif Muhdhar, Matiang’i has declared that the 12th of August 2019 shall be marked as a public holiday countrywide.
The Eid al-Adha day is an Islamic festival celebrated globally to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah’s (God’s) command in sacrificing his son Isaak also known as Isaac.
The Eid al-Adha festival is declared when the moon is sighted and is done according to the guidance of Islamic leaders.
The law, however, grants the CS the final word on which day national holidays should be marked and is only done in respect to the faith of the Islamic community in Kenya where freedom of worship is upheld in the constitution.
In Kenya, the Eid al-Adha will begin on the evening of Sunday the 11th of August and end on Monday the 12th of August 2019.
Public Holidays also mean that most offices will be closed with civil servants getting a day off from their jobs. We wish our Islam community a happy Eid al-Adha.
