A new Ebola cure is set to bring a breakthrough in Congo after decades of research and loss of lives brought about by the previously incurable Ebola.
Congo has in the past had to undergo a torturous time as violence rocked the Country and Ebola threatened the population, killing masses.
The violence notwithstanding, scientists have been burning the midnight oil running a clinical trial of the new drugs in their efforts to end a year-long outbreak that has spread to neighboring Uganda.
The trial cosponsors, on 12th August 2019, at the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health announced that two of the experimental treatments appeared to have dramatically boosted survival rates.
Ebola has previously been considered incurable with patients dying barely a fortnight after infection.
Ebola Vaccine
Ebola has previously had the vaccine as the only form of combat where locals were injected with the vaccine which is still at experimental stages.
Uganda is currently on a vaccination exercise after the virus spread to it from the neighboring Congo, even causing panic along Kenyan borders.
“From now on, we will no longer say that Ebola is incurable,” Jean-Jacques Muyembe, the director-general of the Institut National de Recherche Biomedicale in the DRC, which has overseen the trial’s operations on the ground, said.
“Offering patients a real cure “may contribute to them feeling more comfortable about seeking care early,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who joined the World Health Organization and the Congolese government in making the announcement.
Ebola has been surrounded by stigma as the terror it has created after killing many people in numerous outbreaks can never be overlooked.
Ebola, a hemorrhagic fever virus, was discovered 40 years ago and has continually held Africa hostage with its outbreaks. News of a cure to Ebola is a historic breakthrough that will see lives saved.
Stigma Caused by the Ebola Terror
The fate of Ebola patients will no longer have to be death as has been previously with one being withdrawn from the community and placed in isolation to avoid infecting others.
The pain of Ebola is witnessed further as one dies isolated and surrounded by people dressed in space-like suits. An Ebola victim is later buried in a bleach misted body bag by the authorities.
