Fire Destroys Property Worth Millions in Mathai Supermarket

Gikomba fire

A wild inferno has today morning, 5th August 2019, destroyed property running into millions at Ruiru’s Mathai Supermarket in Kiambu County.

Fire brigades who rushed at the scene to put out the fire have had very little success as it had almost burnt everything to ashes.

The fire, whose cause remains unknown, has occurred just a day after another fire burnt down an apartment near Ridgeways mall in the same Kiambu County.

The apartment fire near Ridgeways mall killed one person, several serious and minor injuries and destroyed property whose value remains unknown.

Ruiru Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO), Cyrus Ombati, confirmed the fire incident and said that the fire began at around 2.30am.

Most of the goods in Mathai supermarket were reduced to ashes as firefighters were challenged by water shortage currently being experienced in Ruiru, Kiambu County, prompting fire engines from Nairobi County to drive for the long distance to assist.

Investigations are ongoing as angry residents called out on the County Governor, Ferdinand Waititu, to sort out the water problem.

Governor Waititu is currently under Court orders not to access his office, a problem that has the leadership of the County experience a rift as the embattled Governor cannot see eye to eye with his deputy Governor James Nyoro.
