Betin Fires All Of Its 2,500 Employees As It Halts Operations

One of the largest gaming firms in Kenya, Betin, has announced that it will be firing all of its 2,500 employees, a decision that is likely to see the Company shut all its operations.

Betin sent out the sad news to its members of staff through an internal memo signed by the Managing Director GAMCODE LIMITED stating that its current woes of certification have greatly affected its operations causing it massive losses.

“This letter serves as a notice of termination by reason of redundancy. This has been occasioned by the fact that we have not been operational since July 2019, a fact we all aware of,” the memo reads.

The license of Betin was revoked in July 2019 together with that of Sportpesa and it has been months of back and forth which has seen the companies make great losses.

Betin and SportPesa licenses were revoked after a row emerged over taxation and proceeded to the Courts after the two were accused of evading tax.

“In view of the above, we have had financial constraints as you might all expect. As a result of the deterioration of the profitability, the management has had to rethink its operational model and to proceed with the exercise of termination,” the Betin memo states.

Betin has also noted in the memo that its management has tried to find alternatives of its situation between the month of July and September 2019 but it has become impossible to continue to maintain its entire workforce forcing it to result to the termination.

With the termination of the Betin employees, it will be 2,500 more Kenyans on the list of unemployed youths.

“We hereby notify you that the positions will be rendered redundant on the 31st October 2019, This notice is given in accordance with section 40 of the Employment Act 2007 and as such the provided for therein will apply to all staff affect,” the Betin notice states.

Employees are warned not to halt their normal operations until the notice date and to continue as scheduled as the Betin Company engages in consultations the best way to ensure smooth termination.
