Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has today, 18th September 2019, closed down indefinitely.
MMUST closed down following students’ unrest in the morning hours that had 15 students arrested.
MMUST students were protesting against a decision by the management to have the students pay ALL outstanding fee balances before writing their exams. The varsity students argued that the decision had not been communicated earlier and were, therefore, accusing the MMUST finance department of harassing them.
Vincent Lumala, MMUST students’ Organization chair argued that the school failed to give the students sufficient time to raise the fee balances before reaching to the decision to have students with fee balances exempted from sitting exams.
The MMUST students’ engaged police officers in while hurling stones at the officers forcing them to teargas them in their attempt to quell the protests.
The MMUST protests have since resulted in damage of property worth unknown value including vehicles.
Kakamega County Police Commander Bernard Muli informed that officers had been deployed into the MMUST area to restore order as the varsity management addressed the grievances raised by the students.
The registrar, Academics, Thomas Sakwa issued an internal memo instructing all students to leave the premises by 2 pm today.
MMUST unrest came a few hours after Mombasa Technical University also broke into protests accusing its management of formulating new oppressive academic policies.
