The Federation of Kenyan Employers (FKE) organized an annual employer of the Year Awards 2019, where Safaricom topped the list.

The telecommunication firm was listed as the best Kenyan employer, above other nine firms in the list, which were East African Breweries Limited (EABL), Standard Chartered Bank, Centum, KenGen, Bamburi Cement, Liberty Life Assurance and Heritage Insurance, Tata Chemicals, Aga Khan University Hospital, and Crown Paints.

The list of the ten best employers was determined after FKE partnered with an auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct a survey.

The survey was conducted between May and September of the year 2019, and FKE and PwC assessed a total of 135 employers.

To make it to the list of the best employers in Kenya, the listed firms had to undergo a detailed assessment of several sectors of quality of services.

The two surveying firms judged the employers based on the effectiveness of human resource practices and industrial relations learning and development, responsible business conduct, innovations, and productivity.

Other qualities used to make a judgement on the best employers included leadership and governance, inclusiveness and diversity, workplace environment and corporate performance.

According to FKE and PwC survey results, Safaricom, apart from being the overall best employer, exhibited the qualities of employee engagement, diversity, motivation, benefits and creating effective industrial relations.

During the employer of the year awards ceremony, the interim Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom, Michael Joseph, said that the Telco would continue soaring to great heights even as they seek to continue improving the workplace.

“We continuously look to improve the workplace through a unique employer value proposition and an inclusive culture,” said Joseph.

“We are grateful and would like to acknowledge that this recognition would not be possible without our customers and partners,” he added.

The East African Breweries Limited (EABL) was ranked first in promoting learning and development of staff and achieving its corporate goals while Centum Investment was ranked top in legal governance and compliance of audits and gender representation at the boardroom.
