The United States of America has announced that it will be sending troops to Saudi Arabia in the wake of drone attacks against the country’s oil refineries.
Last week, a drone landed on one of Saudi Arabia’s largest oil refinery, cutting off 5 percent of the total global oil supply.
Few hours after the attack, global oil prices spiked by around 19 percent with the United States offering to release some of its oil reserves to “stabilize the market.”
US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told journalists that the deployment of troops will be just “defensive in nature” with the total number of troops that will be sent remaining unknown.
Saudi Arabia has blamed Iran for being behind the attacks after it was found out that the weapons used were manufactured in Iran. Houthi rebels based in Yemen and backed with Iran have claimed responsibility for the attack and warned Saudi Arabia of more similar and devastating attacks.
The United States has laid the blame squarely on Iran and on Friday, President Donald Trump announced “highest level” sanctions against Iran a move that showed that Trump wanted to avoid military combat.
In just three days, three world oil producers have been attacked. The recent two countries are Italy and Mexico.
