Bodies of Likoni Tragedy Victims Remain in Floor of Indian Ocean a Week Later

likoni tragedy

Nobody would have predicted that a week later the bodies of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, the Likoni tragedy victims, would still be in the depths of the Indian Ocean.

A painful reality of Kenyans inability to operate in the Indian Ocean has been put out for the World to see, our navy which has been training heavily in the Ocean is still looking forward to performing the march of honor before the President.

I can almost imagine the MCee praising the Kenya Navy on the Mashujaa day despite family spending nights, of what seems to be slowly turning into a fortnight, around the Indian Ocean hoping for a miracle to float the bodies of their loved ones.

If the bodies of Mariam and her daughter, Amanda, were to be floated, what makes Kenyans expect them to be easier to retrieve if the nauseating bureaucracy could not act for around 15 minutes when the vehicle floated before it became submerged into the water?

South African Divers to Save Kenya’s face in the Likoni Ferry Tragedy

Eight divers from South Africa have now joined the Kenya Navy to lead the exercise of retrieving the bodies of Mariam and four-year-old Amanda.

The government’s move to get the divers from South Africa came after the Kighenda family contracted five divers from SubSeas Services, a commercial South Africa diving company.

The government has since brought in three other divers from South Africa who are expected to work together and retrieve the bodies.

Mariam and her daughter, Amanda, drowned on the 29th of September 2019 after their car slid off the ferry to the Likoni channel.

Weather challenges have been said to be hampering the operation to retrieve the bodies but the arrival of the South African divers has raised hopes.

Pathologists are, however, are doubting the condition of the bodies considering the duration the bodies have had to stay inside in the sea not forgetting the underwater animals.
