Safaricom PLC has today, 9th October 2019, announced that it will be changing its M-Pesa logo in honor of marathoner Eliud Kipchoge for the next seven days to E-LIUD.
Eliud Kipchoge, in his challenge to become the first-ever athlete to run a full marathon in under two hours, has attracted a lot of respect and applause from all over the World.
The M-Pesa logo will be accompanied by Eliud Kipchoge’s famous quote, ‘No Human is Limited’ which will read ‘From Kenya to the World, No Human is Limited’ and is expected to champion the service’s capability of empowering Kenyans to send and receive money all over the World.
Safaricom PLC will also provide a free YouTube bundle on the day of Kipchoge’s race from 8 AM to 4 PM.
All Safaricom customers can stream the race live on their phones at no cost after accessing the bundle by dialing *159# upon which they will receive a free YouTube bundle, allowing them to stream the entire race at no cost.
Eliud Kipchoge is Safaricom’s Sports Personality having been awarded in 2018 in an event where he was described as ‘the greatest marathoner of all times before being crowned Kenya’s finest sports personality in the SOYA Awards.
“As our M-Pesa brand ambassador, the greatest runner ever will help take our brand to more people,” a visibly proud Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Joseph said.
“For Safaricom, it is an immense honor and privilege to have the opportunity to dedicate our iconic M-Pesa brand in honor of a befitting icon,” the Safaricom CEO said.
“Our new logo will be the five letters spelling Kipchoge’s first name, ‘ELIUD’ and the numbers ‘1:59’ will denote the challenge he has set out to overcome,” Michael Joseph noted in the mid-morning event.
To rally Kenyans in their support for Kipchoge, Safaricom will enable all its customers to send free messages voicing their support for the athlete during the race by sending a text to 159. The messages will be displayed live on broadcast TV feeds during the race.
“The last few years have seen Kipchoge emerge not only as one of the greatest athletes ever but also as one of the most accomplished people ever. It is a privilege to partner with him on this historic occasion and as an icon, it is only befitting to offer our M-PESA brand in his recognition,” Michael added.
