Houses Flood In Ruiru Estate After Kenyatta’s Family Dam Bursts

Rainfall

Northlands City, owned by President Uhuru’s family is on the spot after a dam belonging to the property burst open after heavy rains pounded yesternight, 4th December 2019 and flooded nearby homes in Ruiru, Nairobi.

The classy urban development which is expected to comprise residential, industrial and commercial units uses water from the Uhuru Dam.

The dam which has been a bone of contention since 2015 after the Kenyatta’s contractors raised the dam’s wall to accommodate more water burst open yesterday night and flooded homes forcing the owners to spend a sleepless night.

Varsityville residents in Ruiru, Kiambu county were against the raising of the dam wall because they feared it could result to the current situation or even worse.

“In our various meetings with you, we expressed our reservations on the ”containment wall” blocking stormwater from our estate into the natural course, which is within your property,” Varsityville residents said in a letter sent on 17th September 2015.

Kenyatta’s development is yet to respond to the concerns raised by Varsityville estate residents despite them now suffering losses of property.

The protest letter had been addressed to Northlands City under the care of Brookside Dairy, a milk processor owned by the Kenyatta family, and was received by Angela Kyungu, believed to be the project leader on 25th of September 2015.

“It (the wall) restricts the natural flow of the water, thereby causing flooding in our estate during heavy rain periods,” the letter, signed by Varsityville Residents Association Secretary, Francis Kiarie, notes.
