The Nairobi Women’s Hospital CEO Felix Wanjala stepped aside after a fortnight of drama that confirmed Kenyan’s worst fear, hospitals had turned them to cash cows in order to milk dry insurance companies.

CEO Felix Wanjala stepped aside to “pave way for investigations” into claims that Nairobi Women’s Hospital was inflating medical bills of patients with insurance covers in order to increase its profits.

Dr. Wanjala who wrote to the Chairman of the hospital’s board on Saturday informing him of the decision to step aside termed the allegations leveled against the medical facility as grave saying he did not believe they were true.

“I have taken time to think about this, although I don’t believe the allegations are true I would want our patients to regain confidence in us as a healthcare provider.”

“I have this afternoon written to the Chairman of the board informing him of my decision to step aside from my position as CEO of Nairobi Women’s hospital effective immediately to allow the investigation team to do their work,” Wanjala stated in the statement.

The withdraw of insurance companies comes as a consequence of a leaked conversation that portrayed how the Nairobi women’s hospital bosses set daily targets for the number of patients that should be admitted to the facility instead of admitting on health grounds.

Nairobi women’s hospital is one of the most preferred private facilities in Kenya and has been in operation for almost two decades.

Complaints of unprocedural charges and admissions are however threatening to bring down the health facility and have profoundly tainted the reputation of the hospital which has resulted to insurers withdrawing.

The WhatsApp conversation was shared on numerous social media platforms prompting the  Nairobi Women’s hospital to speak up and finally pushing the facility’s CEO to step aside.

Kenyans have since shared their experiences in other healthcare facilities and this has greatly affected their trust in the country’s private healthcare providing avenues.
