Keroche Breweries Takes The Fight To Court As KRA Freezes Accounts

Child Law

Keroche Breweries is moving to court to challenge the decision of the Tax Tribunal over taxes it allegedly owes Kenya Revenue Authority.

On Wednesday, the Tax Tribunals allowed Kenya Revenue Authority to collect more than 9 billion shillings from Keroche Breweries in taxes.

KRA has already frozen Keroche Breweries accounts in an effort to collect the 9 billion shillings in taxes as analysts say Keroche is likely to close down.

According to Keroche Breweries, what the Tax Tribunal delivered on Wednesday was an injustice that has created confusion among Kenyans and investors.

“This injustice cannot be allowed to stand. Our lawyers are currently in court to stay this KRA order,” said Keroche in a statement.

Kenyans have since taken to social media terming the decision by KRA and Tax Tribunal as a way being used to punish local investors while paving way for foreign companies to take over.

It emerged that there is a Danish company that is in the process of setting up a brewery in Naivasha, the same place where Keroche Breweries operates. Kenyans feel the government wants to kill Keroche to pave way for the Danish company.

“This is absolute misuse of power that we people have bestowed on KRA. They have lied to the public that we owe them 9 billion shillings. They know very well that the legal process in this matter has just begun. Immediately the Tribunal made the decision, we have 30 days to appeal,” said Keroche.
