Safaricom PLC has today announced that all M-PESA transactions below 1,000 shillings will be free of transaction charges to encourage a cashless economy in the fight against coronavirus (COVID-19).
The decision to waive the transaction charges for all transactions below a 1,000 shillings was reached in a meeting between the Central Bank Of Kenya Dr.Patrick Njoroge and key industrial players from Safaricom.
The meeting between CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge and Safaricom’s leadership comes a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive.
President Uhuru directed that the telecommunication industry explores ways of deepening mobile money usage to reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus through the exchange of physical cash.
The decision for all 1,000 shillings M-PESA transactions to be free of charge will be implemented from tomorrow,17th March 2020 and will be in place for the next 90 days.
