A total of eleven African countries have reported positive cases of deadly Coronavirus as it continues to spread across the world. The Democratic Republic of Congo became the latest country to a positive case after a Belgium national landed in Kinshasa and tested positive.
Egypt is still leading in the number of infections in Africa, at more than 55 with one confirmed death. Interestingly, the rate of infections among African natives is still very low. More than 95 percent of cases reported in Africa involve foreigners.
The slow rate of infections among Africans has set scientists in the Western world in a frantic search to establish whether Africans are immune to the deadly coronavirus.
Here is the list of African countries that have reported positive cases of coronavirus:
Egypt
Algeria
Nigeria
Tunisia
Senegal
Morocco
South Africa
Cameroon
Togo
Burkina Faso
Democratic Republic of Congo
Deaths And Infections
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the death toll is now past 4,000 while the number of infections is more than 113,000 across the globe. At least 64,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus. More than 96 countries have been affected.
Apart from Iran which seemed to be the second-most affected after China, the virus seems to be taking a heavy toll on Italy. On Tuesday, Italy reported 977 new cases of the virus with 168 new deaths. The number of deaths now stands at 631 and infections of coronavirus at 10,149.
The Incubation Period
The coronavirus has an incubation period of between seven and 14 days raising concerns that the rate of infections in Africa might be higher because most visitors might be arriving during the stage the virus cannot be detected. Most African countries like Kenya are also in the spotlight for asking passengers to quarantine themselves for 14 days something that is next to impossible for most people.
As the virus continues to spread, should African countries be more scared and revamp their health sector?
