The death toll in Italy as a result of the deadly Coronavirus has surpassed that of China and experts warn of a real epidemic that is likely to wipe out the whole of the tiny nation.
Italy has now become a country with the highest number of deaths due to Coronavirus, registering an average of 250 deaths per day with the government saying that it is overwhelmed.
The death toll in Italy now stands at 3,404 with the number of infections standing at 41,000. The morgues are now full and the government has told the military to empty them.
Hospitals in Italy have also stopped admitting patients who are 80 years and above suffering from Coronavirus or any other illnesses into the ICU, leaving them to die as the beds are full.
The government in Italy has been forced to let 10,000 medical students into practice, scrapping their final exam to help in the treatment of Coronavirus as WHO warns of more deaths.
A large population of Italy is made up of the elderly. This means their immune system is weak and cannot fight the virus once it strikes. This forced the Pope to hold a special prayer just for the elderly as they are “lonely and scared.”
Globally, the deadly Coronavirus has killed more than 10,049 people and infected more than 245,600 others. The World Health Organisation (WHO) warns the world of more infections and more deaths as the virus continues to sweep across the world.
In Africa, the rate of infections is still low. According to WHO, the continent has only 591 cases (as of Thursday) with only two confirmed deaths. The Secretary-general of WHO, however, has told African countries to prepare for the worst because the worst is yet to come and what is happening in Italy might be witnessed in Africa.
What should people do? Wait for death?
