The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Kenya has risen to 336 after 16 new cases were announced on Friday by the Ministry of Health.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Health announced 17 new cases after testing 668 samples taking the number to 320. The numbers have continued to surge even as a section of political leaders calls for the total lockdown to contain the virus.
The Ministry of Health says that 887 contacts that are related to the 16 cases announced on Friday. “We are currently monitoring 887 contacts relating to these cases, and we hope they will not produce many more cases,” said the Ministry during the daily briefing.
Five more people have been discharged within the last 24 hours bringing the number of those who have recovered to 94. The Ministry says that it hopes to make sure that as many people as possible recover from the pandemic.
Kenyans have continued calling on the government to put in place measures, including mass testing, that will help cut down on the further spread of the deadly virus.
During the week, 50 people who had been placed in a quarantine facility at KMTC escaped raising concerns about how manning the quarantine centers is being conducted. The government says al those who escaped will be traced and brought back into the quarantine center.
So far, South Africa is the only country that has carried more tests than any other African country. The number of confirmed cases in South Africa is at 3,953 followed by Egypt at 3,891.
Morocco, Algeria, and Cameroon have 3,568, 3,007, and 1,334 respectively. Most African countries have initiated lockdowns to contain the spread of the virus.
In East Africa, Kenya is nows leading with 336 confirmed cases followed by Somalia with 328 confirmed cases. Tanzania follows closely with 284 confirmed cases while Sudan has 174. (apart from Kenya, other East African countries have not announced their latest numbers)
