20 Kenyan health practitioners have tested positive of the deadly Coronavirus according to Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU).
According to KMPDU, the infected health practitioners include 7 doctors while others are nurses and clinicians. The union says 8 other health practitioners are in quarantine after being exposed.
KMPDU says even though doctors, nurses and other practitioners are the real footsoldiers in fighting the pandemic, the government has continued to ignore their safety.
In most cases, the union says nurses and doctors do not have simple things as facemasks, leave alone protective gear that can protect them against Covid-19.
The Ministry of Health through the Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has disputed the numbers given by the doctors union saying the numbers of those infected are “minimal”.
On Monday, Kenyan announced 11 new cases of Covid-19, taking the total number to 208 with the Ministry of Health telling Kenyans to continue preparing for the worst even as they hope for the best.
At the same time, the government, through the Ministry of Health has announced that mass testing of Kenyans for Covid-19 has kicked off with at least 1,000 tests being carried out daily going forward. This also means the number of confirmed cases might increase.
Globally, the number of confirmed cases on Monday stood at 1,909,293 with the number of deaths being at 118,499. A total of 440,273 people had recovered from the virus by close of business on Monday.
As Coronavirus continues to sweep across the country, Kenyans are being encouraged to:
✓ Stay at home
✓ Wear masks
✓ Wash their hands
✓ Maintain social distance
It is, however, sad that there are some Kenyans who are still organizing house parties and having crowds at their residential places without adhering to the precautions set by the Ministry of Health.
The government has vowed to arrest anyone who will go against the directive.
