Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe had no kind words when he stood today to address the media on the COVID-19 daily briefing as he literally launched his briefing with an attack to social media users for cyberbullying Kenya’s first patient, Brenda.
Brenda whose identity was not known up to yesterday, 1st April 2020 was highly praised by President Uhuru Kenyatta in a virtual meeting together with Kenya’s third patient identified as Brian.
Soon after the identity revelation excitement settled, Brenda was invited to local media houses namely Citizen and NTV where she was interviewed and in what seemed to be a mix-up of dates from her part, Brenda’s interviews were picked by Kenya’s social media ‘detectives’ who concluded she was lying.
Brenda and Brian were shortly criticized as a government project meant to drive an agenda and from small revelations, social media users turned personal and scrambled into her social media accounts flaunting her photos and making fun of her across various platforms.
Those who did not question the legitimacy of Brenda and Brian’s cure of COVID-19 accused the government of taking advantage of them and playing Public Relations stunt with them.
“The situation in our country is not getting better, it is worsening and as a government, we are working hard and I am sad that Kenyans are trivializing our efforts to fight this pandemic,” the Health CS has said referring to the social media trolling of the two first cured patients in Kenya.
“Why would we make PR with the lives of the two cured Kenyans, I appeal to the media not to spite these efforts and call upon the law enforcers to arrest these social media users,” the Health CS posed.
“We have lost two patients, one in Nairobi and another in Mombasa, bringing the number of patients who have died from COVID-19 in Kenya to three,” the Health CS has said.
Kenya now has confirmed 110 cases of COVID-19 after 29 more people have tested positive in the country out of 662 samples tested in the last 24 hours.
