Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has announced a new way to conduct massive tests for Coronavirus samples by using HIV and Tuberculosis test machines.

The KEMRI researchers have said that they will use the new approach to test up to 5,000 Coronavirus samples in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.

Currently, Kenya is only able to test 600 samples making it difficult to prevent further spread of the virus or take prompt action on those tested positive.

The experts said they will use Cobas 6000 or 8800 HIV machines meant for HIV testing and the GeneXpert machines which are used for TB testing.

The Cobas 6000 is said to have the capability of testing up to 5000 samples within 24 hours according to Prof Matilu Mwau, Kemri Busia director.

Seven counties including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu and other private facilities have the Cobas 6000 testing machines.

“In the unlikely event that we get to that point, we will be ready,” he told a local daily.

The government through the ministry said it is planning to run massive tests and give faster results than usual.

While giving the Covid19 updates on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, the Health CS said that healthcare workers and those under quarantine will be given first priority when it comes to testing.

By Tuesday, 4,923 people were tested in Kenya where 172 had positive outcomes.

The number of cases has ballooned in recent days with Health CS warning Kenyans to brace for even more bad news.

However, a good number of Kenyans are reportedly staying at home thus reducing the chances of more spread of the virus.

The biggest challenge has also been contracting to trace but in recent days, strict methods were put in place to ensure travelers are isolated as soon as they are from foreign countries.

The free advice is just to stay at home, keep social distancing, maintain proper hygiene and adhere to other necessary measures and “We Shall Succeed”.
