The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert targeting at least 40 counties this weekend to April 20, 2020.
“The rainfall being experienced over several parts of the country is expected to continue into the weekend and the better part of early next week,” said the statement from the Department.
According to Kenya Met, heavy rainfall of about 30 millimeters in 24 hours is expected over Western, Central region including the Nairobi area and the coast region of Kenya.
The heavy rainfall is expected to spread to the southeast, northeast, and northwest regions of Kenya this Saturday of April 18, 2020. For those along the coast, the heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by strong winds of about 20 knots and strong waves of about 2 meters.
Here are some of the counties expecting heavy rainfall starting this Friday:
Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Lamu, Tana-River, Taita Taveta, Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Meru, Nyandarua, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Samburu, Turkana, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Garissa, Busia, Kisii, Bungoma, Nakuru, Narok, Migori, Nandi, among others.
Residents in these regions have been told to be on the lookout for possible floods this weekend. Those staying in landslide-prone areas such as the Aberdares and the sloped of Mt. Kenya have been advised to be vigilant.
Those living along the coast have been advised to avoid the sea or be vigilant because the rain in the region will be accompanied by strong winds and waves that might cost lives.
During the week, there has been heavy rainfall in most parts of the country, including Nairobi with landslides being experienced in some parts like in Kiharu Constituency.
For the counties in the Rift Valley and some parts of Western Kenya, such as Bungoma, the rain comes as a blessing, especially for those who had planted their maize and were afraid that the rainfall might not come back.
