National Hospital Insurance Fund has appointed Dr. Peter Kamunyo Gathege as the new Chief Executive Officer who will take office from the 14th of April 2020.
Dr. Peter Gathege was appointed through a competitive recruitment process and has replaced Nicodemus Odongo who was in an acting capacity.
Dr.Gathege is a healthcare officer with a 21-year of experience in clinical practice and healthcare management, medical insurance, healthcare supply chain and strategic purchasing and the pharmaceutical industry.
Dr. Gathege is also said to be a dynamic leader with a vision and passion for innovative healthcare solutions to strengthen access, implement quality systems and optimize health outcomes.
Added to his rich portfolio is a contribution to effective regional and global corporate governance and efficient sector participation. Dr. Gathege has been a non-executive Board Director at the Kenya healthcare Federation and the East Africa Healthcare federation.
The new CEO holds a Master of Science Degree in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from the University of London, England, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Postgraduate diploma in sexually transmitted infections and HIV management from the University of Nairobi.
With his rich portfolio and experience, Dr. Kamunyo will is expected to bring forth impactful leadership at the NHIF.
NHIF’s Board of management believes that Dr.Kamunyo’s expertise and experience will enable him to steer the fund to achieve its core mandate and everything else that is yet to be achieved.
“He brings to the fund a wealth of professional experience with an extensive background in senior leadership positions at pioneering innovative healthcare organizations, global market leaders in the field of insurance brokerage and medical scheme administration and fund management,” NHIF said in a statement.
His appointment comes a year after former CEO Geoffrey Mwangi and Acting Director, Finance and Investments Wilbert Kurgat were sent on compulsory leave.
