COVID-19: 30 News Cases, Mombasa Gets 19 As Bungoma Registers First 2

Kenya

Kenya has registered the first highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in 24 hours of 30, after testing 883 samples according to the Ministry of Health.

Of the 30 cases, 19 are from Mombasa while 8 are from Nairobi. For the first time, Bungoma County has registered two confirmed cases.

The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kenya has now moved to 465 with the number of deaths moving to 24 following 2 more fatalities in the past 24 hours.

According to Health CAS Dr. Rashid Aman, the government through the Ministry of Health has acquired the capacity to undertake all the targeted testing but “the willingness of the people is too low.”

The government rolled out free testing for COVID-19 in places such as Old Town in Mombasa but people refused to turn up. The majority of them say they are scared of stigmatization associated with the disease as well as the high cost in quarantine facilities as well as medication.

The Inspector-General of Police has been ordered to set up designated holding facilities for individuals who will be found with the curfew hours. According to the directive, those arrested for breaking the curfew directives will not be quarantined in designated government facilities.

There have been concerns about the police using the excuse of curfew to solicit bribes and sending those who cannot pay to quarantine centers. Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has threatened to use force t have the locals tested if they will not turn up willingly.
