Former Harlequins Stars 23-Year-Old Alex Olaba and Kenya 7s 22-year-old Frank Wanyama (Rugby Players) who were serving 15 years in prison each for raping a woman in 2018 got a reprieve after the high court ordered their retrial on June 30.

Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba were to spend 15 years in jail after they were convicted of rape but they appealed and were released by Milimani Law Court magistrate Zainab Abdul.

Wanyama and Alex Olaba pleaded not guilty before but were found guilty of the rape act and were handed 15 years jail term which they have appealed.

This was after they pleaded not guilty to charges of gang rape and committing an indecent act when they appeared in court on Tuesday 7th July, 2020. The Magistrate directed that the case be mentioned on July 21st, 2020 for purposes of fixing a hearing date.

Last week, the High Court ordered a retrial of former Kenyan Internationals Frank Wanyama and Alex Obala who had been sentenced to 15 years in Jail.

The case was to be heard afresh at a lower court since the High Court noted that the existing records do not show whether one of the witnesses was sworn or not.

11 months ago, Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku sentenced the players to 15 years in jail after they were found guilty of raping a female musician.

In an Instagram post by the accuser,  she said she could not fight the two professional players on a particular night, letting them have their way. The incident is said to have happened at Seefar Apartments at Nairobi’s Highrise area.
