Promotion is generally an increase in an employee’s rank which may also be accompanied by a rise in pay, benefits, and responsibility, a promotion is however based on a couple of factors, which Merit is one of.
Promotion by Merit basically means being given more ranks because of the good quality of your performance, merit means you are particularly good or worthy, therefore deserve praise or reward.
It is always advisable to promote by merit, which means taking somebody out of their unit to go to another higher unit that they know a lot about and that they can properly handle and produce quality results.
Sometimes employees tend to divert away from merit, which is promoting by experience, quality, and hard work, and end up ranking people just because they got a good score on a standardized test, normally when a company conducts one.
Sometimes, some managements also tend to focus on promotion by Seniority which means based on the length of service by an employee in the organization. Merit, however, means the qualification which an employee possesses.
To get promotion on the basis of merit requires hard work and sincerity on the part of the employee and your role as the head of management is to identify those hardworking employees and offer them promotion.

Since the promotion itself is based on efficiency, talents, and hard work, it encourages the other employees to increase their knowledge in a positively competitive but productive manner and work even harder to deliver.
Merit is like identifying a good resource and utilizing it because you are aware of the positive impact, It helps you in putting the most productive and competent person for specialized jobs for quality results.
When new employees are notified that the company promotes by merit, they will also be encouraged to improve their performance as promotion is made on the basis of competence, capability, and efficiency.
Promotion by merit results in overall improvement and growth of the organization, employees will realize that in that organization, hard work pays therefore this will boost their working morale and sparkle their completion levels.
Promotion by merit itself is another way of motivating your employees, it motivates the competent employees to exert all their efforts, resources, and contribute them to the organizational efficiency and effectiveness.
