An image has been spreading on social media platforms allegedly showing Bondo Nurses Welfare Association that is said to have purchased a Hearse to help them earn an extra income.
Many people have found the image funny and been making jokes about it. Some have been saying it is a side hustle just like any other. But is it?
Nurses and doctors are like gods on earth. They deal with human life. It is factual to say that nurses and doctors sometimes have the powers to decide whether you die or you live.
Coffin makers make money when people die. When no one is dying, there is no business for them. Same goes to those who run hearse and morgue business. They all depend on death of human beings to make money.
What happens if those who took an oath to save lives set up a business that makes money when a life is lost? Is it professionally allowed for nurses and doctors to run coffin making businesses, operate hearses and set up morgues and funeral homes?
It is understandable that nurses in Kenya, despite their crucial role in saving lives, they are among the poorly paid. But this does not justify the business. Simple question; will you be comfortable in the hands of a nurse whose husband sells coffins? I doubt if you will be.
The government, through the Ministry of Health should ensure that nurses and doctors are paid well so that we do not have such “life-threatening side hustles.”
