Mike Mbuvi Sonko is no longer the Governor for Nairobi County after the Senate voted to impeach him on Thursday night after two days of intense submissions with Sonko trying to save his ship from sinking.

The Senate voted on four charges against the Governor; abuse of office, gross misconduct, crimes under law, and misuse of public funds.

On the first charge, a gross violation of the law, 27 senators voted to have him go. Abuse of office, 27 senators voted to have him go, same to abuse of office and the fourth charge.

Mike Sonko was impeached by the County Assembly of Nairobi, prompting the matter to head to the Senate as stipulated in the Constitution of Kenya.

Since Mike Sonko did not have a Deputy, following the resignation of Polycarp Igathe, the running of the county will now be in the hands of the County Assembly Speaker, who will hold the position for a period of 60 days.

Sonko now becomes the third Governor to be successfully impeached by the Senate after Ferdinand Waititu Baba Yao of Kiambu, Martin Wambora of Embu (went to Court and stayed on). Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga was let off the hook by the Senate.
