A gang of eight armed men raided the Nairobi residence of billionaire Manu Chandaria’s home in Muthaiga estate on Sunday night, December 13, and robbed the family of 600,000 shillings and jewelry.
According to the Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the robbers managed to disarm an Administration Police officer of his G3 rifle. Other guards on duty were found tied in a room as the gang escaped towards Karura forest.
Nairobi police commander Rashid Yakub stated that police officers responded in time to rescue the family. They confirmed that no family member was injured during the incident, though the criminals carted away family valuables of an unknown amount.
Chandaria told police he heard a loud bang on his entrance and when he woke up to check what had happened he found two men in his bedroom. This was after his efforts to reach the security through the phone didn’t bear fruits.
He said the gang was armed with a pistol and a cutter when they arrived in the bedroom and they demanded cash and jewelry before he showed them where the safe was.
The gang escaped through the neighboring Karua forest, some having sustained gunshot wounds, according to police reports. Police officers also recovered a rifle, believed to belong to the AP officer.
Three suspects are being held at the Muthaiga Police Station following a robbery incident at businessman Manu Chandaria’s.
The suspects include an Administration Police officer and two G4S officers who were mandated to guard the billionaire industrialist’s residence.
Nairobi County police boss Rashid Yakubu said they are interrogating the three officers after it was reported that gold and jewelry items of an unknown value were stolen.
The police chief revealed that preliminary investigations show that the incident was an inside job, adding that the truth will be established.
