It is long since people talked about “Njaanuary”, well January, but always an unusual one with seemingly more days than any other month in the history of a year.
Well, for the January of 2021, human beings, especially Kenyans, might be silent but it is silently eating them from within and the majority are about to explode.
Although during the month of December, especially during Christmas, millions seemed to be fully immersed in eating Chicken and nothing closer to chicken products, the majority are now eating like chicken.
2020 was a tough year and anybody complaining about January being an unusually tough month will be forgiven and even given some holy waters to motivate him along.
2020 was marred with the Covid-19 pandemic, an event in history that nobody was ready for. Infections rose, deaths reported and people were scared all over.
Millions of Kenyans lost their jobs. KNBS puts the numbers at 2 million but they were higher than that. The World Bank says at least 2 million Kenyans slipped into extreme poverty in 2020.
On December 31, 2020, many Kenyans were happy that the damn year was coming to an end. Despite the curfew in place, some found some minutes to defy it and shout away the wretched year.
Came in 2021, the month is January and people have no idea where to turn to. Everyone seems to be broke. Everyone seems to be crying and asking for help for the simple reason that there is no money.
Almost everyone is broke this month of January. Even the government is broke. That is why one Balozi Ekur Yattani is busy trying to convince the World Bank and the IMF to give us some “few billions of dollars.”
The Jubilee government, to help Kenyans have a long and painful January increased taxes, scrapped all Covid-19 relief, increased the price of fuel as well as other products and services.
It is also the month Magoha Son of Magoha decided that all kids must be back in school and parents are just running mad trying to find school fees.
Njaanuary is here to last it’s full of days. Fasten your seat belt.
