Kenya Power Owes KengGen 24 Billion Shillings

Electricity

Kenya Power and Lighting Company owes Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) 24 billion shillings for electricity supplies.

Kenya Power gets its electricity from KenGen before supplying it to Kenyans. As Kengen continues to make profits, KPLC seems to be sliding deeper into an economic ICU.

In 2019, the amount KPLC owed Kengen stood at 19.37 billion shillings, but rose by 24 percent to 24 billion shillings to June 2020.

The amount is now beyond the 90 days required for KPLC to pay with stats indicating that currently, Kenya Power is running on the negative.

In its annual report, however, KenGen listed the debt 77 million shillings less, opting to leave out penalties accrued. The Auditor General has asked KenGen to explain why the debt indicated is less.
